A spreadsheet can be a useful home inventory. If you want a simple list of what you own and where it is, you can start with tools you already use. RIVET gives you another way to keep that information: individual item records, photos, instructions and a shared inventory your household can use. The full app is free, with no subscription or paid upgrade.
What do you need to remember?
For a short list of possessions, a spreadsheet may be enough. You choose the columns, enter your items and decide how to share the file. You can add links to photos or instructions and build a system around the way you work.
RIVET brings those details into an item's record. A pressure washer can have its operating instructions. A salt lamp can have the bulb details you want to remember next time. A freezer item can have its use-by date. Finding the thing also brings back what you need to know about it.
Compare the everyday jobs
| The job | A spreadsheet | RIVET |
|---|---|---|
| Record what you own | Add rows and choose your own columns. | Create individual inventory items and locations, with or without QR labels. |
| Find an item | Search the file for the item's name or location. | Find its record in the app, or scan an associated QR label. |
| Keep useful details | Add columns, notes or links to other files. | Keep photos, notes, instructions, warnings, attachments and use-by dates with the item. |
| Share with your household | Share the file and manage access in the tool you use. | Share one live inventory with your household, included in the free app. |
| Keep locations current | Edit the relevant rows when things move. | Update a whole tote's location or move an individual item's location. |
Both need someone to record a change
No inventory stays current just because it exists. If the hatchet leaves its tote for the trailer, someone still needs to record that move. RIVET treats the hatchet as an individual item, so you can change its location without changing the other things in the tote.
RIVET also gives you a check-in on the item details: “I just looked at it—still there.” Use it when you encounter an item to record that you have checked it. That is a practical touchpoint, rather than a promise that the app knows about changes you never recorded.
Try one useful place
If your spreadsheet already does what you need, keep using it. If you want to see how RIVET fits your home, start with one tote, shelf or freezer drawer. You can print your own labels inside the app or use it without labels. Buying RIVET labels is optional.
